Insomnia is a deeply personal musical journey through the restless hours of a sleepless night. Pianist and composer Mattias Spee brings together nine of his own compositions, each portraying a different stage in the night of an insomniac. What begins as an intensely solitary experience becomes something universal: that strange nocturnal world in which silence, anxiety, imagination and introspection coexist. The album was recorded live at the final concert of Spee's 2023 Insomnia tour at TivoliVredenburg in Utrecht, The Netherlands.The roots of Insomnia lie in a turning point in Spee's life. While studying classical piano in Salzburg during the pandemic, isolation and growing frustration with the conventions surrounding him brought back the insomnia he had experienced as a teenager. Sleepless nights became moments of reflection, eventually awakening an irresistible desire to create music of his own. Composing offered Spee a new artistic freedom and transformed insomnia from a source of anxiety into inspiration. Insomnia captures that transformation: an intimate, vulnerable and ultimately liberating portrait of an artist finding his own voice.
